Pirate's Paradox by Lisa Kessler

This is a fun, insta-love, paranormal romance. If you are looking for a quick and easy read with some fun paranormal elements that tie into some of the great mysteries of our world this is a fantastic option. Lisa Kessler's writing is quickly engaging, fast paced and full of humor and emotion. The romance is sweet and low angst and the insta-love element plays well into the paranormal and mystical elements of the story. This is the sixth book in the Sentinels of Savannah series and it is the first book I have read by Lisa Kessler. While being deep in the series, I still found this story to be easily digestible and I did not feel lost in the world. Kessler is clever by making each story standalone-able through quick explanations of the situations (by having the heroine be in a new readers shoes), as well as crafting paranormal elements in a world that resembles our own.

This paranormal mystery strongly revolves around the love story between Caleb-an immortal pirate, a navigator and a man of science and Diana-a psychic and spirit guide. They both find that they are interconnect through dreams that hint at a disruption in the Atlantic ocean which Caleb is picking up on unusual tides which specific coordinates. These coordinates makes Caleb and Diana think they are linked to the lost city of Atlantis.

This novel starts off with a bang, we are quickly introduced to our players and the dire situation that they find themselves in. Caleb might come off a little grouchy at first but this quickly fades as the instant attraction between him and Diana take hold. Caleb and Diana quickly learn to work together and respect each other. I love that Caleb is in a way a "virgin" type of hero. Caleb has not been with a woman since he was still human. So Caleb can be a bit awkward and scientific when it comes to his courtship of Diana. I love that Diana is strong and knows what she wants. I love that both Caleb and Diana feel such a strong pull to the other that they don't hesitate to put themselves at risk when it comes to saving the other. You dive hard into the insta-love and because of this we have a nice handful of sensual scenes between Caleb and Diana. I really love that these scenes are about trust, respect, consent and protection, and I love that Caleb is able to embrace all these modern ideals as he explores a physical and emotional relationship with someone else (which he has not experienced in hundreds of years). The true focus of this novel is on the romantic relationship between these two but Kessler also weaves in some mystical elements from our own past while giving it a gentle paranormal twist. I really enjoyed this it was fun to have some interesting elements to enforce the strong working relationship the pirate crew has as well as the working relationship that Caleb and Diana are able to establish.

Overall, a fun and lighthearted paranormal romance with a low angst, insta-love romance to carry along the story. This is the perfect quick read if you are looking for something that is pure entertainment that will keep you interested the entire ride.
