Book Review

Penelope Black’s Avalon Falls series has truly been a beautiful experience where each installment features a romance that feels uniquely its own but still holding the comfort and familiarity of the central family. Shattered Promises is an emotional and heartfelt journey in which Black’s character shine. Black’s writing is clear and engaging, her characters are rich, and the situations are relatable. This novel is built on care and understanding and the foundational development of discovering who you are and what you need. The Avalon Falls series has truly been a series that I fallen easily in love with each installment and continue to love and see more of small town family.
Shattered Promises is the romance between Mason, a surprise single father, and Abby, his best-friend’s sister. This novel centers Abby’s journey of self discovery and her reflection of where she is in her life and what she truly wants and dreams of. Mason and Theo (his son) ultimately provide the support and safe place for her to land as she explores her options. Abby and Mason both hold this unrequited love for the other, so watching their relationship widen was truly a beautiful and gratifying journey. Mason really provides a space for Abby to contemplate her life and not feel the judgement she worries her family will bring. Watching Abby develop a love and care for Theo is also just the cherry on top of a truly delightful romance.
I would so highly recommend this novel, this series and this author. I have found that reading this series in order really creates this beautiful family arch, but each novel can be easily read as a standalone.
