Whispers of You by Catherine Cowles

Updated: Feb 5, 2023

With each novel, Catherine Cowles continues to solidify herself as a must read, contemporary, small town, Romance with suspense author! Cowles has a way of immediately drawing the reader in and keeping them turning the pages until the end. I find Cowles' writing to be easily accessible, understanding and caring, richly emotional, and intriguingly edge of your seat. Whispers of You is the first in a new series and Cowles definitely has a hit on her hands. I devoured this novel, I chuckled, I gasped, I yearned and I guessed up to the end how this suspense would play out. If you are a Cowles fan you are sure to be delighted, if you have never read her before you are sure to find a new favorite author.

This book jumps right into the action and mystery that will drive the overall plot of this novel. Definitely go into this novel with some caution (heroine is a victim of house invasion and is shot, as well as this novel deals with deaths, depression and anxiety). Cowles hooks the reader in the pilot, showing us a tragic event years ago that ripped our couple apart, and then officially starts the novel 10 years late not telling us why these two are not together. What then slowly unfolds is two soulmates, learning to forgive themselves, learning to see a new perspective, learning to make amends, and learning that love is stronger than anything. Cowles also features family and found family as the support and backbone of this novel in such a wonderful way, this is definitely a strong element in all of her novels and gives readers exciting glimpses into future novel protagonists.

I found this novel to be a wonderful start to a new series, I am hooked and so excited for this world to continue to open up. This second chance romance is never an if they will get back together, but how. From page one, the pull and chemistry between these two is so strong, that there is no way that they are not going to be together. This novel really shows how a tragic event, and the ways we perceive ourselves can overall effect how we deal in moments. I think this novel is also about growth, these two are high school sweethearts and obviously soul mates, but perhaps they needed to be apart for some time, to grow into themselves, learn their own independence, so that way they could learn to be a balanced partnership. I know that some might feel that the hero does not grovel long enough, but I feel like these two know that you are not always guaranteed moments, so they don't waste time in the past. I love that we see how strong the heroine has become and that she can stand on her own to feet, but that she also is not weak for seeking strength from the hero either. I love that these two truly learn to support each other, be there for each other, trust each other, and call each other out when it is needed. I think Cowles has really created a beautiful relationship that has had the chance to mature and become richer and deeper because of their time apart.

This beautiful relationship is also surrounded by a plot driven by suspense, that I found to be intriguing and had me constantly guessing who was truly at the heart of the devastation. Cowles has created secondary characters that are the heart of this small town and they are interesting, and a support system for our main characters in a really wonderful way. Cowles crafts this universe with care and understanding, and it feels so real, and I am so excited to watch this world and these characters grow and develop throughout these year with each new release.

I so very highly recommend this novel, and all Catherine Cowles novels. If you love a small town, family driven, romance with an element of suspense, you will not be disappointed!

Thank you to Catherine Cowles for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
