A Good Book is the final installment in Jewel E. Ann’s Sunday Morning series that follows a trio of sisters who are coming to terms with their religious believes and upbringing with become an independent adult who has dreams that might be different from what their father expected. Following Ann’s signature style of angst and emotions, each novel will take you on a different and cathartic emotional journey bringing these sisters and their relationships to each other and their parents into new focus. These novels are also set in the late 1980s, which plays really well with the conservative and small town upbringing into a different focus and understanding that comes with the oppressions of that time. Anne’s writing is clear and fully embraces the tone and embodiment of the character whose head she is in at every moment. Because the reader is so strongly linked to the character we are in their heads and see their motives and insecurities in a more personal way.

This romance is a best friends to lovers romance between Ben and Gabby who are both in their first year of college and have life throw them some pretty major curve balls. Their romance is messy and full of insecurities which, while frustrating, are exactly who these people would be at their age and while dealing with the various life obstacles that are thrown their way as they are learning who they are as people not under their parent’s roofs. This novel is emotional and angsty, everything that I have come to expect from Ann, and the journey the reader is taken on is also equal parts sweet, frustrating, romantic, sexy, and endearing. The relationship these two start off with at the beginning fully morphs and changes throughout the story as they both are forced to grow up separately and then really fight to come back together. In the end, it is clear that these two will overcome any obstacle together as long as they fully trust the other.

Jewel E. Ann is an author I really enjoy, knowing that the journey she is going to take me on might not always be easy, but in the end I will be left with a full and happy heart. A Good Book is a wonderful example of Ann’s work and if you love a college romance between best friends then definitely check it out.
