Elizabeth O'Roark's The Favorites series has been a wonderfully delightful look at various different second chance romances! My Favorite Fake Romance, explores a second chance at a romance that never got to take flight. O'Roark's writing is imbued with tension and angst that will drive the reader to frustration over the character's lack of true communication. Then through chemistry and hope, this romance takes hold and ends in such a gratifying way! O'Roark for sure knows how to build and manipulate situations to drive her characters with frustration, wade their way through heart ache, but ultimately fight for what they deserve.
Easton and Elijah find themselves in a fake dating situation when Easton needs to make her ex-boyfriend (who was suppose to propose) jealous and Elijah needs a doctor to road trip with him and his grandmother to his sister's (and her best friend) wedding. These two have been in love with each other for years, but when Elijah pushes her away, Easton moves on with her life. I adore a forced proximity, they were always made for each other style romance, and through in a road trip element and I am so there! I love that this road trip feels immersive and fun as we spend time in Florida and New Orleans. O'Roark kept me pining along with these two as the tension between them builds and the "hate" element in their love story become clear as just an excuse to keep either of them confronting their feelings heads on. As their story and romance unfolds it becomes clear that both have made moves and decisions out of their assumptions of what the other wanted and needed. I loved watching Easton grow and struggle to come to terms with who she is and what she wants for her future. I also love that Elijah also grows and starts to see that he does not have to be the only caretaker, but that he can lean on his sister, and he can go after the girl. Throw in a meddling grandma and her friend, and this romance blends humor, frustration and the ultimate gift of love!
I have adored this series, each novel has been its own perfect installment that feels unique and fresh while still exploring this second chance element of two people finally coming together at the right time! If you love Elizabeth O'Roark and the hair tearing frustration and yearning for the two lovers to just communicate and talk to each other is your jam, then pick up My Favorite Fake Romance today!
