Second Down Scrooge is a truly lovely second chance romance. I have not had the opportunity to check out Lisa Suzanne's work before, so this was a lovely treat and I am looking forward to checking out more of her back list. Suzanne's work was easily to engage with and was well paced to keep me interested in what would happen next. I felt like Suzanne developed her character's clearly and beautifully, they were complicated and interesting. Second Down Scrooge does begin in the middle of a relationship between the hero and heroine, and I am not sure how much of their previous interactions we see in other novels. This ultimately was not an issue for me, because this story is really about moving forward from their pasts, taking a leap on a true relationship and building a family together with their infant daughter.
This romance really focus's on the growth of the hero-Austin Graham, who is a pro football player. He is in love with Kelly, the mother of his child, but neither have been able to commit to a true relationship due to trust and things that Austin has done in the past. It is very obvious that the chemistry and tension between these two is off the charts so it is easy to fall in love and root for them. Austin is one of those misunderstood heroes, but he works hard to change himself for the better for Kelly and their daughter Mia. Kelly is a strong and independent heroine, she loves being a single mother and she deep down feels this pull to Austin that is hard to ignore. Her love for her daughter and the softness and ease she sees in the relationship that Austin and Mia has goes a long way with giving her the strength to take a leap of faith in their relationship. This novel has lots of lovely soft and heart warming moments where Austin shows that he can be trusted. It is really wonderful watching these two have this mutual relationship that grows into one of strength, understanding and clarity.
I truly enjoyed this novel and Lisa Suzanne’s writing and would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a holiday, second chance romance between two people who are co-parenting their daughter. This novel is equally sweet and sexy and full of holiday spirit, family and friendship. This is sure to not be my last novel from Suzanne!
