The Renter by Serena Pier is an interesting novel that is a bit hard to truly categorize. It is the first official installment in the SAGA series which is to follow the heroine-Dani and her journey of growth and ultimately love. So this novel will not leave you with a typical HEA, which Pier is very clear about before you dig into the novel. I respect that Pier is clear with her readers from page one about what to expect because without this I definitely would have approached and left this novel with feelings unbefitting to Serena Pier’s intention for this story and her heroine.
Pier’s writing is clear and quick paced, through the use of short chapters it is easy to really clip through the novel which has both benefits and downfalls. The quick paced nature of the novel worked well for me in this story is not a romance. I also felt due to the quick nature of the chapters there was also a distance created between me the reader and truly investing emotionally in the characters. This novel also has many different secondary characters and a lot of outside plotting driving situations around the Dani which keep this moment in her life as one of exploration. Dani is young, and still feels young, and Adam is the hero who is about 20 years older and in a much different place in his life.
This novel has a chaos to it which really helps to heighten the situations and emotions around Dani which drive her forward through this relationship. This novel is one that is sure to work for some people and sure to be conflicting to others. I respect Piers craft and voice and see it akin to other works like those from Jess’s Hastings or E.L. James, so there are definitely readers who are going to love this messy and epic journey that Dani is on. These are not my favorite types of romances so not something I typically gravitate to, but I was happy to give it a shot and see how Pier approaches a love narrative, I have only read a novella from her at this time.
If this is a premise that you find interesting and if you don’t mind a story that will unfold through multiple installments, then Pier’s SAGA series should be something you give a chance.
Thank you to Grey’s Promotions for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
