The Summer I Destroyed You by Elizabeth O’Roark

A complicated heroine is definitely one of Elizabeth O’Roark’s strong suits. O’Roark’s writing is compulsively readable, her characters are intense and multi-layered, and her world and situations feel strongly grounded in reality. Each book in this series does not shy away from emotions and complications and each novel further solidifies Elizabeth O’Roark as a queen of angst who can take an unlikeable character and show you things are not always what they seem.

The Summer I Destroyed You is a beautiful exploration of how our pasts shape us into the people we are today. The heroine and hero both are shaped into who they are by this same small town and watching the heroine who was belittled and demeaned come back for revenge starts this novel off in a strong way. The push and pull between these two is tension filled and angsty. I loved that their initial relationship was built through text communication and I adored that their first in person interaction puts them both off on the wrong foot.

The hero and heroine are the balance the other needs and this romance is truly the heroine’s story of learning to grow, forgive and move on. These are things needed to make her a better well rounded person and not for the benefit of those who wronged her. I loved that the hero is steadfast in his feelings, he pushes her, he stands up for her, and he loves her even though she can push his buttons like no other. The romance is not only hot and sexy but it is heart warming and redeeming.

Definitely pick up this novel and this series today! If you love a multilayered romance with characters with layers that will be challenging but gratifying, then Elizabeth O’Roark will be for you!

Thank you so much to Valentine PR for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
