Anytime I pick up a Kylie Scott book I know I will be entertained and drawn swiftly into the romance while rooting for the couple's success and happiness. This novel is exactly what I would hope and expect from it. I was quickly drawn into this romance, I swooned along right with the heroine, and I really enjoyed watching two people take a chance on love even though they both had past heartaches and insecurities. Kylie Scott's writing is engaging, accessible, funny, understanding and heartwarming.
This novel is told in first person through the eyes of the heroine- Ani, who is a 30 year old woman who has some past traumas and anxieties, and Garrett, a 37 year old famous rock star who lost his wife 2 years ago. When Garrett moves in next door to Ani, she is surprised to find a famous man moving in during the dead of night in her small town. After meeting through the window, then again in person, they slowly strike up a friendship and trust that grows into something neither of them expected.
This story is a beautiful building of a trusting relationship between two people who sometimes have a hard time trusting others. Watching these two learn to be vulnerable and open with each other is truly gratifying. Scott takes her time building this relationship and in the long run it is the perfect choice because we are able to see how these two work through obstacles that come their way without creating any large misunderstandings. I absolutely love the way Scott moves us through their relationship and the growth of it without a third act break up. Garrett is an absolutely swoony hero, he has been hurt when it comes to love, but he also does not shy away from it when he rediscovers its beauty. I love that Garrett is all in with Ani and he lets her know that and that he will take things at the pace she needs while also letting her know that he is in the relationship for the long haul. When their relationship progresses into the physical, Scott does a wonderful job with the steam, it is well written and the level works well for this quick paced romance.
If you love a relationship built on friendship, trust and understanding this is a fantastic option for you. If you love seeing two people supporting each other as well as opening the other up to take chances this is a delightful option to explore. I love Kylie Scott and the way she makes a "famous" character and everyday person feel real and down to earth. I can't wait for the next release from Kylie Scott!
